About Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is traditionally a spooky month with Halloween festivities and chilling weather. It also presents an opportunity to delve into the equally spine-chilling world of cyber threats after former US President George W. Bush designated October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in 2004.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is designed to educate individuals about the importance of cybersecurity, both personally and professionally. The aim is to create awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. Over the years, the program has evolved to address the ever-growing threats in cyberspace, with a particular emphasis on the role of individuals.
What began with simple press releases and webpages has now grown into a comprehensive campaign led by CISA.
What Is Happening This Year
This year, the Cybersecurity Awareness Month initiative aims to be the most extensive one yet, with a theme of “Secure Our World”.
The focus of this year’s campaign is on four key behaviours to stay safe online:
- Use strong passwords
- Turn on MFA
- Recognize & report phishing
- Update software
As cyber threats become more sophisticated, individuals and families, small and medium businesses, and large companies all have an important role to play in keeping our digital world safe and secure,
says CISA Director Jen Easterly
This Cybersecurity Awareness Month we are asking everyone to do their part to “Secure Our World” by adopting key behaviors that promote online safety and security.
CISA and NCA are partnering to create resources and messaging for organizations to use when they talk with their employees, customers, and memberships about staying safe online.
CISA is hosting a series of free, virtual webinars every Tuesday in October 2023 from 2-2:30pm EDT to help people implement the pillars of this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making a positive impact in the face of the growing cyber threats
Alongside these efforts, CISA and NCA are offering a toolkit for both businesses and individuals to enhance cybersecurity culture.
