MGM Resorts System Outage due to Cyberattack

What Happened

MGM Resorts experienced a cybersecurity incident that severely impacted various aspects of its operations, including company emails, reservation records, room access systems, and even casino slot machines.

The incident was initially detected on September 10th, 2023. The FBI is currently investigating the incident.

It remains unclear how long it will take MGM to bring all its systems back online and how hackers were able to infiltrate the company’s networks.

Response from MGM Group

MGM Resorts has officially announced an ongoing investigation into the cybersecurity incident.

The company has enlisted leading external cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation.

Also, law enforcement agencies have been contacted to conduct a thorough investigation into the breach and provide crucial details about the hack.

The websites for several MGM properties have been taken down, and visitors are being directed to a list of phone numbers for affected properties to call instead. The MGM Rewards App, where guests can access their digital room keys and trip information, is also offline as of Monday evening.

Impact to Customers

The attack caused a system outage, which affected the reservation and booking systems, as well as guests’ access to ATMs and digital keys.

Guests were unable to check in or out of their rooms, access their money, or use digital keys to enter their rooms.

This unfortunate scenario led to the denial of services such as massages, steam baths, waiter services, and other amenities. In some cases, guests were even locked out of their reserved rooms, prompting the hotel staff to enlist specialists to provide physical access to these rooms.

In response to the growing frustration of guests, MGM Resorts has taken a compassionate approach by offering credit to some of its loyal patrons on its regular guest list.
